Property context

Name the building type and the affected part of it

An Edinburgh address may describe a tenement flat, converted villa, terraced house, basement home, mews property, modern managed block or business premises. State the floor, room and entrance used by the affected property. For a conversion or extension, identify whether the plumbing issue sits in the original or later part of the building when that is known. This context can reveal access or coordination questions, but it does not diagnose a hidden fault or establish ownership of shared pipework.

Shared access

Stairs, keys, factors and service cupboards affect access

For flats and managed buildings, note the common entrance, floor, lift status and who can open any relevant service space. If a tenant, landlord, factor, concierge or building manager is involved, explain their role and whether advance notice is required. Keep reusable door and alarm codes out of the enquiry. For houses, add side, cellar, loft or garden access only where it is relevant to visible plumbing or a planned route. Do not enter an unsafe void simply to provide more detail.

Water movement

Leaks can travel across rooms and levels

When water appears away from a visible pipe, record the highest and lowest marks, nearby fixtures and what was in use before the symptom changed. In a multi-occupancy building, mention another affected flat or common area and whether the relevant occupier or manager has been told. Use a known, safe local isolation only when it can be operated without force. Avoid wet electrical fittings and use the relevant urgent safety route when conditions create immediate danger.
